CAER/OFA Eye Exams ( previously CERF)
What is a CAER Exam?
A CAER (Companion Animal Eye Registry) exam is a specialized screening designed to detect inherited eye diseases in dogs. These exams are an important tool for breeders and owners to ensure the long-term health of their animals and to help reduce the risk of passing on genetic eye conditions.
Dr. Nancy Bromberg performs CAER exams in accordance with the standards set by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO), providing accurate, reliable evaluations for dogs.
Who should get a CAER Exam?
-
-
Breeders of dogs – to screen for inherited eye conditions before breeding
-
Working and service dog organizations – to ensure the vision health of dogs that serve critical roles
- Pet owners – who simply want reassurance that their dog’s eyes are healthy and free of abnormalities
-
What to Expect
-
Quick and gentle – the exam is short, non-invasive, and well-tolerated by dogs
-
Pupil dilation – eye drops are used to dilate the pupils for a thorough evaluation
-
Official documentation – owners receive a written certification form with exam results
Note
CAER exams are screening exams only. They are not intended to diagnose or treat medical eye problems. If your dog is experiencing vision changes or eye discomfort, please consult a veterinary ophthalmologist for a full medical evaluation.
